According to local folklore, once an evil demon named Kaalnemi began tormenting the sages and disrupting their penance. Desperate for help, the sages gathered by the Kosi River and prayed to Surya Dev (Sun God) for salvation. Pleased with their devotion, Surya Dev infused his divine energy into a sacred stone, a Vat Shila, using his powerful rays to destroy Kaalnemi.
Recognizing the importance of this event, King Katarmal of the Katyuri dynasty later constructed the Katarmal Sun Temple at this very spot. The temple has since been known for its divine history and architectural beauty.
