According to ancient lore, during the Mahabharata era, Karna, the son of Surya Dev, stayed at Devi Patan while mastering the art of archery (dhanurvidya). During his time at the temple, he dug a pond to provide water for performing rituals and worshipping the goddess. This pond came to be known as Surya Kund in honor of his divine father, Surya Dev.
