The legend of Golu Devta begins with the story of his divine birth. It is believed that Rani Kalika, a queen, gave birth to Golu Maharaj. However, the other queens, driven by jealousy, plotted against the child. They replaced the newborn with a stone and abandoned the baby near a river. Fortunately, the child was found and raised by a fisherman.
Years passed, and one day, Golu Maharaj, now 8 years old, rode a wooden horse to a pond, where the king's queens were bathing. The queens laughed at the sight of the wooden horse drinking water. To this, Golu Maharaj responded with a powerful statement: “If a woman can give birth to a stone, why can’t a wooden horse drink water?”
The king soon learned about the truth of Golu Maharaj's birth and punished the queens. Golu Maharaj was then declared the rightful heir and became a symbol of justice in the region. Known for his fairness, he rode his horse across the villages to deliver justice to all, earning the eternal respect and devotion of the people.
The Temple's Unique Tradition
One of the most distinctive features of the Chitai Golu Devta Temple is the tradition of writing letters to the deity. Devotees believe that Golu Devta listens to their pleas and provides justice. People come from far and wide to write their grievances on pieces of paper and hang them in the temple, hoping for a resolution to their problems.
In addition to letters, devotees also offer bells once their wishes are fulfilled. Over time, these offerings have resulted in the temple being adorned with thousands of bells of various sizes, creating a mesmerizing sight. From small hand-sized bells to large, heavy ones, they symbolize the answered prayers of the faithful.
