Story of Hanuman Setu Temple, Lucknow
Hanuman Setu Temple also known as the the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple is nestled along the banks of the Gomti River in Lucknow.
The foundation of Hanuman Setu Mandir was laid by Neem Karori Baba. The temple has a compelling tale of survival against natural calamities. Legend has it that during a severe flood in the Gomti River, which threatened the surrounding areas, local authorities suggested relocating the idol of Lord Hanuman.
Neem Karori Baba, confident in the deity's protective power, famously declared, “Let the Gomti take the temple if it can!” Miraculously, despite several subsequent floods, the temple remained unscathed, reinforcing the devotees’ belief in Lord Hanuman’s divine protection.
A Unique Tradition of Sending Letters
One of the most fascinating aspects of the Hanuman Setu Mandir is its tradition of receiving letters from devotees around the world. Every year, the temple collects over three hundred thousand letters addressed to Lord Hanuman. These aren't just any letters; they are heartfelt prayers and wishes that devotees write, hoping for divine intervention in their lives.
It is believed that by writing their wishes down and sending them to Lord Hanuman, devotees can have their prayers answered. Once their wishes are fulfilled, they return to the temple to offer thanks and sometimes sponsor the shringar (decorations) of Lord Hanuman as a gesture of gratitude.
