Jhula Devi Temple in Ranikhet, Uttarakhand

Jhula Devi Temple is located in Ranikhet, Uttarakhand and is dedicated to Maa Durga. The temple is not only a place of deep devotion but also a symbol of the unique bond between the villagers and the divine goddess. The temple gets its name from the swing (jhula) that holds a special place in the worship and legend of Maa Jhula Devi.

The story of Jhula Devi Temple dates back to when the forests around Ranikhet were dense and filled with wild animals like tigers and leopards, which posed a constant threat to the nearby villagers. The locals were often afraid to venture into the forests for firewood or graze their cattle, as many had lost their lives to animal attacks.

One day, a shepherd from a nearby village had a divine dream in which Maa Durga appeared. She instructed him to dig at a particular spot in the forest. The next morning, the shepherd followed the instructions, and after digging, he discovered a beautiful idol of Maa Durga. The villagers took this as a divine sign and, in gratitude, built a temple at the very place where the idol was found.

After Maa Durga's idol was established in the temple, the wild animal attacks gradually decreased, bringing peace and safety to the villagers. Over time, the temple became a place of worship and a source of protection for the people of the region.

The most unique aspect of Jhula Devi Temple is the legend surrounding the swing. According to local tradition, during the month of Sawan (monsoon season), swings are hung in the temple courtyard, and people of all ages, from children to adults, enjoy swinging under the blessings of the goddess.

It is said that one day, Maa Durga reappeared in the dream of the same shepherd, expressing her desire to swing on a jhula just like the villagers. In response, the villagers placed a swing for the goddess in the temple courtyard, and from that moment, she became known as Jhula Devi. The ritual of placing swings in her honor continues to this day, especially during the Sawan festival, when devotees come to offer prayers and enjoy the divine connection.

By Air: The nearest airport is Pantnagar Airport, located approximately 115 kilometers from Ranikhet. From the airport, taxis and buses are available to reach Ranikhet.

By Train: The nearest railway station is Kathgodam, which is about 80 kilometers from Ranikhet. From Kathgodam, one can take a taxi or bus to reach the temple.

By Road: Ranikhet is well-connected by road to major cities in Uttarakhand like Nainital, Almora, and Haldwani. Regular buses and taxis are available from these cities to reach Jhula Devi Temple.
