Kamakhya Devi Temple is nestled in the quiet village of Kusoli, in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand. Known for its powerful spiritual energy, the temple is dedicated to Maa Kamakhya, one of the most revered goddesses in Hindu mythology. While Kamakhya Devi is famously worshipped in Assam, the story of how she came to reside in this small village in Uttarakhand is a unique and fascinating one.
The legend begins with a local resident, Madan Mohan Sharma, who served in the Indian Army. During his service, he was posted to Assam, where he became a devoted follower of Maa Kamakhya. He regularly worshipped the goddess at the famous Kamakhya Temple in Assam, known as a powerful Shakti Peeth.
One night, Maa Kamakhya appeared in his dream and told him, “I will come with you.” This divine instruction deeply moved Madan Mohan Sharma, and when he returned to his native village in Pithoragarh, he established a temple dedicated to Maa Kamakhya on a nearby hilltop. This is how the powerful goddess, worshipped across India, came to reside in the peaceful and scenic landscape of Kumaon.
After the establishment of the temple, Madan Mohan Sharma dedicated his entire life to the service of Maa Kamakhya, ensuring her worship and care became central to the village’s spiritual life.
