The Kot Bhramari Devi Temple is located approximately 18 kilometers from the serene town of Kausani in Uttarakhand and is dedicated to Maa Durga.
The legend of Maa Bhramari Devi is closely linked to the temple's origin and significance. It is believed that in ancient times, a demon named Arun terrorized the region. This demon used his powers to block all the natural water sources, such as rivers, streams, and waterfalls, leaving the people of the surrounding villages in severe distress. Life became unbearable for the villagers without water, and they sought divine intervention.
In their despair, the villagers turned to Maa Durga, offering prayers and pleading for her assistance. Arun, having received a boon from Lord Brahma, was immune to attacks from any creature with two or four legs. Taking advantage of this, he continued his reign of terror.
To defeat this demon, Maa Durga manifested in the form of a six-legged bumblebee ("Bhramari"), a form that was beyond the scope of the boon given to Arun. Maa Durga stung and killed the demon in this powerful and unique form, thus liberating the region from his evil influence.
From that day onward, Maa Durga came to be worshipped here as Bhramari Devi, the goddess who took the form of a bee to protect her devotees. The temple was built in her honor and has since become a key site of devotion and pilgrimage.
Historical Importance of Kot Bhramari Devi Temple
The Katyuri dynasty, which ruled parts of Uttarakhand during the medieval period, played a crucial role in establishing the Kot Bhramari Devi Temple. The Katyuri kings considered Maa Bhramari their kuldevi (family deity) and constructed the temple to honor her. They believed that the goddess protected the royal family and their kingdom, and this devotion led to the widespread fame of the temple.
Over time, Bhramari Devi became affectionately known as "Kot e Mai", which means "Mother of the Fort" (Kot referring to the fort-like structure of the region). The temple continues to draw devotees who seek protection and blessings from Maa Kot Bhramari.
