According to legend, when Lord Ram exiled Goddess Sita, he instructed Lakshman to take her to Rishi Valmiki's ashram. After fulfilling his brother’s command and leaving Goddess Sita at the ashram, Lakshman was overwhelmed with emotional turmoil on his return journey to Ayodhya. His mind filled with distress, he stopped at the banks of the Gomti River, where he installed a Shivling and prayed to Lord Shiva for peace.
After worshipping Lord Shiva, Lakshman’s mind found some relief, and the place where he installed the Shivling became known as the Mankameshwar Temple. Over time, it gained fame as a temple where devotees believe their mental unrest is soothed, and the grace of Lord Shiva fulfils their deepest wishes.
