The Nageshwar Nath Temple, nestled on the banks of the sacred Saryu River in Ayodhya, is one of the city's most ancient shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. Dating back to the Treta Yuga, it is believed to have been established by Kush, the son of Lord Ram.
According to local legends, Kush, Lord Ram's son, was bathing in the Saryu River when he accidentally lost his armband (bazuband) in the water. The armband was found by Nag Princess Kumudini, the daughter of the Naga King, who was mesmerized by it and kept it with her. When Kush discovered that his armband had been taken, he became furious and threatened to destroy the entire Nag Lok (serpent world).
In an attempt to protect her kingdom, Princess Kumudini prayed to Lord Shiva for divine help. Moved by her prayers, Lord Shiva appeared before Kush and pacified his anger, urging him to marry Kumudini as a gesture of peace. Bound by Shiva's words, Kush agreed and married Kumudini. Grateful for Lord Shiva’s intervention, Kush decided to establish a Shiva Linga at the site in honor of the deity.
Since then, this sacred place has been known as Nageshwar Nath, meaning "Lord of the Serpents," symbolizing Shiva’s protective and peaceful nature over the Naga dynasty. The temple became a major pilgrimage site, revered by those seeking blessings and protection from Lord Shiva.
